Chapter Three

Kara twisted to try to reach the zipper on the back of her dress, but the snug fit and low cut made the task impossible. She exited the bathroom and found Harper sitting on the sofa, looking way too hot in his dinner jacket. Tamping down a rush of desire, she turned away from him. “Would you mind?”

“Not at all.” Standing behind her, he slid the zipper up as slow as humanly possible. When he brushed his fingers along her bare skin, she shivered at the lush sensation.

The instant he was done, she moved away, then grabbed her clutch from the dresser. “I’m off to dinner.”

“What a coincidence. So am I.”

Why hadn’t he awakened her in time for the regular dinner seating? Irritation prickled at her even though she hadn’t asked him to be her alarm clock. Now she was starving and cranky, but at least it was almost time for the midnight buffet.

Harper took a sip of his scotch, then set it down and headed out after her.

Aware of his stare on her backside, she swayed her hips a little more than usual as she strode through the hall. Awareness sizzled through her.

He wasn’t honest with me.

She had to forget about him, find someone else to share her bed for the remainder of the trip. Yes, that would be her mission tonight. Why should she let last night’s mistake condemn her to miss out on a good time? She had to purge the scorching memories they’d minted by making some new ones with someone else tonight.

She picked up her pace, stoked by the prospect of finding a nice selection of hot guys at the buffet, although Harper’s presence would surely hamper her efforts. What man would dare approach her with a six-foot-two wall of muscle hovering so close?

When she entered the dining room, she found loads of men dressed in fine suits and even a few in tuxes. Why didn’t any of them look half as appealing as Harper?

Damn it.

He’d spoiled her with his broad shoulders and his stupid crooked nose. She found a drink station and quickly downed a glass of champagne. Exactly what she needed. The bubbles instantly improved her mood, so she helped herself to a second drink. Leaving her flute at a table, she started toward the extravagant buffet.

“Mind if I sit at your table?” Harper said against her ear.

“Yes, I do.” Why did he have to smell so good? She took her place at the end of the line.

“Kara.”

Glancing around for the source, she found Jim heading toward her. Harper’s expression immediately darkened. Good.

I hope he’s eaten up with jealousy.

She waited for Jim to catch up to her, then offered him her hand. “I’m so glad I ran into you.”

His gaze slid quickly over her body. Then he narrowed his eyes on her face and took her hand. “Are you alone? Could I really be that fortunate?”

“Tonight’s your lucky night. And thank you for those lovely flowers. You’ll have to come and see how the blooms have opened.
